Things You Probably Don’t Know About the Library for the Visually and Physically Disabled

Dearest Voracious Readers,

Did you ever wonder what the Library for the Visually and Physically Disabled is?  Here are a few facts:

LVPD is a full service library with books, DVDs, Library of Things, printing, faxing and more

LVPD doesn't just serve those who are blind or those with physical disabilities.  You also qualify if you have dyslexia or another reading disability, other sight issues like macular degeneration, or if you physically cannot hold a book.

LVPD is federally funded and our service center covers every public library in Muskegon AND Ottawa County.  That is 9 libraries (or library districts) in Ottawa County and 4 in Muskegon (all MADL branches, Hackley, White Lake, and Fruitport).

We are one of two libraries in West Michigan with a Tovertafel. Dutch for "Magic Table" a Tovertafel is an interactive game console for people with cognitive challenges developed by the Dutch company Tover.

LVPD also is fully equipped with assistive technology such as:

  • Large screens
  • Adjustable height desks
  • Large text keyboards
  • Keyboards with braille bumps
  • Zoom Text Software
  • Jaws screen reader software
  • Physical print to speech software
  • Magnifiers
  • Braille Printer

By far though, the best thing about LVPD is our Librarian Sax who specializes in helping visually impaired and disabled patrons.  Please stop  by LVPD at 4845 Airline Rd, check it out and say hi to Sax!
