In March, MADL will begin hosting monthly Memory Cafés at our North Muskegon Branch, the first of its kind in Michigan, designated by Dementia Friendly America.
A Memory Cafe is a welcoming, comfortable, low pressure, and supportive space for individuals living with changes to their memory or thinking, and their caregivers. It's not a support group or a clinical workshop, but rather a social gathering where people can relax and enjoy themselves without the fear of stigma or the pressure of "being right".
Inspired by a framework developed by Dementia Friendly America, MADL's Memory Café is designed to focus on the person and the community, not the diagnosis.
Each session is unique, but the basics remain the same: meaningful conversation and shared experiences.
-
Social Connection: Meet others walking a similar path in a relaxed, non-judgmental environment.
-
Engaging Activities: From music and guest speakers to creative arts and nostalgic storytelling, we provide a variety of lighthearted activities.
Memory changes can sometimes feel isolating, both for the individual and their caregiver. Memory Cafés aim to break that isolation so that participants can experience the joy of community and a chance to learn new things!
